F2A-2 Buffalo History: In June 1939, nine went to Squadron VF-3 on the USS Saratoga (CV-3) of the first deliveries. The balance of 44 were declared surplus and sold to Finland (where they were successfully employed until 1944). Although it was becoming clear that the F2A was inferior to the latest German fighters, the United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands East Indies purchased several hundred of the land-based versions. Any type of modern monoplane fighter was considered better than nothing, and the Brewster planes were available during the early World War II. An improved variant, the F2A-2, of which 43 were ordered, included a more powerful engine, a better propeller, and integral flotation gear, and was followed by the F2A-3. Unfortunately, the improvements added weight that adversely affected the fighter's performance and caused perennial problems with its landing gear (collapse issues), especially in shipboard service. The Brewster Buffalo was the first monoplane fighter to enter service with the U.S. Navy. In 1936, this fighter plane was designed in response to a U.S. Navy design contest, in which it competed against and bettered the aircraft that would eventually replace the Grumman F4F Wildcat. F2A-2 was by far the best version of the Buffalo. F2A-2 had sturdier Wright R-1820-40 engine, which produce 1,200 hp. Its top speed can increase up to 344 mph at 16,500 feet, making it quicker than the F4F Wildcat. Firepower was standardized at four .50 calibre machine guns, two in the engine cowling and two in the wings. This model did not enter U.S. Navy service until September-November 1940. Even by then it was clear that the aircraft was obsolescent. Over the course of 1941 the F2A-2 was replaced by the F2A-3.
