USS Carl Vinson CVN-70 History: The USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) is a United States Navy Nimitz class supercarrier named after Georgia Congressman, Carl Vinson. After Carl Vinson was commissioned on March 13, 1982, it was put to sea for a post-commissioning shakedown. Carl Vinson had several designated nicknames during its lifetime of service, including the Chucky Vee, the Battlestar and the Gold Eagle. On August 12, 1986, Carl Vinson became the first aircraft carrier to operate in the Bering Sea after its second deployment. On January 1987, after its extensive operation in the Indian Ocean and North Arabian Sea, the carrier returned to Naval Air Station Alameda, transiting the Bering Sea once more. In 1988, Carl Vinson departed for its fourth deployment. Its fifth deployment was on February 1, 1990, making port calls to Honolulu, Hawaii, Sasebo, Japan, Subic Bay, the Philippines, Diego Garcia, Perth, Australia as well as Singapore and Hongkong and dropping the Air Wing off at San Diego, CA. Carl Vinson departed in February 17, 1994 in support of Operation Southern Watch. Carl Vinson also participated in Exercise Ke Koa scheduled on August 26 until September 3, 1995 and other ceremonies to commemorate the end of World War II in the Pacific. In May 14, 1996, the ship departed for its seventh deployment in support of Operation Southern Watch and Operation Desert Strike. Carl Vinson also participated in Exercise Rugged Nautilus before returning to Alameda on November 14, 1996. From January until June 2001, Carl Vinson began preparation for its twelfth deployment overseas in support for Operation Southern Watch. In January 2003, Carl Vinson was set for a one month work up for Flight Deck Quals. The ship was extended at sea indefinitely upon the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Carl Vinson won the Marjorie Sterett Battleship Fund Award in 2004 for being the most battle-ready ship in the U.S. Pacific fleet.
