Martin P5M-1 Marlin History: The Martin P5M Marlin is a twin-engined piston powered flying boat in service with the United States Navy and also served the U.S. Coast Guard and with the French Navy. P5M Marlin's maiden flight was on May 1948. In 1949, the first production of P5M-1 aircraft was produced. A number of P5M-1 were used for training and was designated as TP-5A after 1962. It was the evolutionary successor to the PBM Mariner and had better engines, improved hull form and more conventional tail. The Marlin was designed as a gull-winged aircraft to lift the engines and propellers high above the spray. P5M Marlin is powered by two Wright R-3350 radial engines. It has a nose and tail turrets with twin 20 mm cannon in each, as well as a dorsal turret with two 0.5 in (12.7 mm) M2 Browning machine guns. The cockpit area was also the same as the Mariner. It has a maximum speed of 251 mph and a range of 2,050 miles. One P-5 is at the US Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida and was scheduled for restoration due to its poor condition.
